Re-Gel my 18'6??

I would love to re-gel the bottom of my 1977 18'6 to the original white. I never keep it in the water, so the bottom paint doesn't really help things. [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img] Anyone have any suggestions on whether to re-paint or re-gel. Kinda low on the $$ right now [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img] Any help would be appreciated

We had this discussion a while back. I opted to Re-gel my Mako 21. It is being worked on as we speak. There will be arguments for both gel or awlgrip, but every glass guy I talked to that does it for a living told me gel is going to last longer. Thats what I was looking for

When I re did my boat I painted everything except the bottom I had the bottom paint soda blasted off and they re gel-coated the bottom. There are a few things I would do differently if I re built another boat but that decision I would do again the same way for sure. My boat stays on a trailer all but a couple of weeks a year so I don’t need or like bottom paint. You could do that job yourself and shouldn’t cost you to much $ but will cost a lot of time, sweat and a lot of Budweiser to do it right.

Have any idea on what kinda price I'm looking at?
Just for the bottom, I think I can buff out the sides.

It will depend on how many coats of bottom paint you have. A fair guess would be around 750.00 for someone else to do it right.

If you have someone else remove the bottom paint and re gel coat it with you doing the sanding and buffing of the gel coat will probably cost you approx $1,000 to $1,500 or so. If you do it yourself the pressure cleaning machine with hopper for materials, you will need approx 400 lbs of sand or soda about $150 ,then you need to have some one at a boat yard to put it up on boat chocks and move it a few times another $150 for the space and the lift, then you will need 1 gal of gel coat plus roller and other stuff. Another $150-$200 or so, then you need to sand and buff and wax. My guess 5 days of hard work and about four 6 packs of Bud I had some one do it for me cost $1,200 the rest of the boat I did myself I ran out of time before my vacation reservation plus I hate working upside down and this job was truly worth someone else to do it for me for the extra $700 and 5 less days for work.
