23’ i/o motor mounts on stringer
I have a 1975 23’ Sceptre with an i/o set up. The bolts in the motor mounts are loose. Likely the wood they bolt into is rotted. (The transom has water but is not in need of work.) I want to verify my understanding... the stringers are fiberglass with possible foam inside. There is then a wood block glassed on top of the stringer used to secure the two motor mounts. My assumption is that i can cut out the two wood blocks and reglass some new wood blocks for the motor mount. Is that right? Am i missing something?
Source of problem was a failing coupler likely due to slight out of alignment due to loose motor mounts. |

Mine was solid wood all the way across the hull. Mind you I had twin I/o’s. Hope you can see in the pictures. One still has the mount on it. The other is when they cut everything out of the hull. You will have to zoom pics

has anyone cut out the wood blocks and replaced them? I assume the stringers are hollow, right?

My 76/77 23 had motor mount beds just like that. The beds were pieces of 2x6s with glass over the tops and a small wood riser/pad glassed on exactly like what is in your pics. The 2x6s were cut at a bevel to match the hull and did not touch the actual stringers. Unfortunately the 2x6s did not have any glass on the underside (the hollow area) and were waterlogged and rotten. I ripped it all out and replaced it with glassed Coosa. I made the beds lower so they let water drain off and made taller riser pads for the mounts. No way for the puddles to form outboard of the beds now.
