Default Crack in the keel.

Recently I put the boat in the water and did not sink the trailer enough,put the boat in reverse and took of about 6 to 8 inches of glass from the V about 1/4 way back from the bow.( It rubbed on the trailer when the roller gave out). Recently pulled it out and noticed water coming from inside the hull onto the driveway.I'm in the process of sanding it and i'm going to leave it alone to dry for a few days, then put a couple layers of ounce and a half mat and feather it with micro ballons. My concern is I wonder if I should glass the inside also, any help is appreciated.RS.

I can understand your concern. In South Fl. we will use our boats year round. This means we get pounded at times. If I understand where your damage exists.....it's a point where you absorb most of that pounding. If you can get to the inside...by all means do so. Dont know how you would accomplish this without lifting the deck though. Some wonderful fiberglass folks in Key west. suggest they take a look at it. I always refer to "The Fiberglass boat repair manual" By Allan H Vaitses. Water comming out on the driveway is not to be taken lightly. Gather intel from some experts, and do it right. Overglass the area to stronger than it was is my suggestion.

Hello Roland, I've decided to let it dry for a few days and I'm going to run a strip of mat over lapping the V twice to make it stronger then feather it. Its possible to get to it from the inside but I would have to cut out the bottom of the front compartment to get to it. Since its right on the center of the V this outside reglassing should do it, thanks for your advice.RS.

I would not advise repairing the damage you described with 1 - 1/2 oz mat. If you have compromised the laminate (cracked the hull) you need to re-build with at least an equal strength repair. Grind away on either side, use at least 18 oz fab mat or biaxial cloth and epoxy. For outside repairs, wet out the patches on a tray, hold them in place with some plastic film and dct tape, and let cure. grind smooth, and THEN start in with microlight and the "body work" part of the repair. Got to get some strength before making it look pretty...

John, Tom, thanks for the info,I will go with a heavier mat. Those pics dont resemble my problem Id have to take it to a pro if that where the case.thanks again RS.

Default Damaged keel

Badabing23 had a repair fail 40+ miles offshore and lived to tell about it.. lucky for home he had twin250 on his boat and kept the bow up... Check his thread out on damaged 23 for sale... Looked like the repair was with csm. Only...if I were you I would repair from inside as well.. but that is just my two cents
