leak in steering

I have a hynotic steering on my 1979 20' SuperFisherman and a month ago I noticed a little fluid behind the wheel on the fill screw. The screw seems to not be the right fit, so I filled with fluid and put a tighter screw in. The next time out, fluid was coming from under or behind console. It was not alot so I figured I overfilled it. My third time out since, the steering seems hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They make a gasket kit for re conditioning them and there are a few companies that will do that type of work for you. There was a thread about 2-3 months ago that talked about it.

If you value your life and like the ability to steer, why fix it? Buy a new unit.

I have a Hynautic helm unit in another boat and found hydraulic fluid on the console floor. The gaskets in helm get old and you might also have a shaft problem.

I sent unit to Charman Enterprise in Eaton Ill Phone #
800-247-6324. Hynautic is owned by teleflex now. I saw new units for sale by West Marine. It cost me $200 to fix. I recall new unit was about $600.
