NC OBX vaca, best spot??
After hearing nothing but good things about NCs outer banks for many years, my girlfriend and i are going to spend a long weekend out there in late august. I know there are a lot of different options from the silly tourist book she got and the internet. any better ideas of what to aim for/stay away from from you folks would be appreciated. basically we want a quiet beach we can walk to and not a chili's on every street corner. im sold on hatteras area, as we live in charleston it will be easier to get to than the northern portion. unfortunately we're taking her matchbox of a sedan with gas being what it is so no 4wd and no seacraft but i am trying to figure out how to best break the news that a few 11 foot surfcast rods will be accompanying us...any info is greatly appreciated; thanks in advance.

Re: NC OBX vaca, best spot??
Stay in Hatteras Village, take a trip to Ocracoke Is, go up to Oregon Inlet Fishing Center to see the fleet come in. Go to Manteo and check out the city, go to Wanchese and check out the custom NC boat builders, go to Lost Colony. If you have time go to Beaufort, NC and catch the boat to Cape Lookout for the day - walk to the Ocean and explore - go out in the sound and collect sand dollars. Try the downeast style clam chowder. See if Froggy Dogs is still in business N of Hatteras. Check out the Hatteras Marlin Club- behind the Red and White in Hatteras village. I am sure other NC guys can tell you more to do. Depends on if you are bringing children. Beware of the Hatteras mosquitos - they tend to swarm. See if NEDOs is still open - Odens dock backwards. Oh by the way visit Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Re: NC OBX vaca, best spot??
Born and raised there, fished there, if I could move/live anywhere it would be Hatteras Village. Moved away when I graduated from college and wound up in TX. But go back every year to see family. There is alot to do on the OBX of NC. I have also spent time in Charleston and really enjoy that. Have a nice vacation - if you really want to spend time off the beat - visit Bear Island off of Swansboro - I was there last month and watched an Aircraft Carrier, Harriers, Ospreys, Copters and variours marine manuervers offshore. Very impressive if you like that stuff.
