Default Finishing the inside of gunwale rod racks-- 20'MA

I have 1984 20' Master Angler and have taken the factory carpet off the hull under the gunwale rod rack area. What are people doing to finish that hull area. I see some finished boats that appear to have a nice smooth finish to that area. Are they using skin material and gluing?

for my undergunnel rod racks in my seafari i gelcoated the fiberglass (did not waste my time sanding perfect) and added green and yellow splatters (yellow hull/green bottom), i think i looks good and doesnt require a tremendous about of finish work, its one idea...

what I did on the redo of my 1978 MA was to mold some fiberglass skins with a gelcoat finish, using the outside of the boat to get the right angles, then I secured them in place using mat and resin.

here is are some pics to give you some idea

I would just put some carpet back in - the other options seem alot of work - maybe you could figure out another major project

I like my black carpet adds a tad of color to the boat mostly

sure wish I could get somebody with a MA to trace those rod holders on a piece of paper though

Clean all the glue off from the carpet with wire wheel and then paint it. Primer will fill in a lot of imperfections. When you are done, you have a slight texture of the original woven roven pattern shining through. It is easy and I think looks great.
