R.I.P. Chrysler 318
Thanks for the replies, Bushwacker and Islander!!!
Well...it looks like my engine is shot. I thought I needed exhaust manifolds and risers, which would run $800+. My flywheel is missing teeth too. I could have lived with that, but to have it installed, I would need to hire a mechanic to lift the motor...$500+. Also, my water pump "may" be shot. $100+. Total of $1400+ Plus compression in 1 cylinder was 25 and in another cylinder it was 75. The mechanic stopped the test after that, so he wouldn't have to charge me the full hour. I have access to a compression check setup, so I'm going to check it myself. So...a mechanic across the canal from my boat has a few complete inboards in the $1300 range. I may look into it soon, or I may wait until Spring. However, if I wait until Spring, I run the risk of higher prices and a longer wait to get engine installed, since everyone is trying to get the boats ready for the season. Does anyone know a great engine place on Long Island? I'm looking for a deal. I love my boat. |

After having 2 inboards I would recommend not cutting corners.
Your best converting to a chevy power and carb to keep it simple. Raw water coole will be simple and cheap and should last a while with only riser and manifold changes every 5 years. Here is a good site to get some estimated costs. http://www.marineexhaustmanifolds.com/ or http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/index.php You could find a rebuilt or used 318 but you may end up in the same boat if you run into issues again. Spending more $$ and time at the dock vs out on the water. Depending on the HP you had now you may be able to go down to the 4.3 v6 Chevy.

Ditto ct...there are literally thousands of Chev blocks out there, and you could even by a donor boat sometimes cheaper and just pull the motor.

Thanks guys!!!
I'm looking into all options. My budget is $3000. I would love to drop $5000-$6000, but that's not an option right now. I've been looking for donor boats. |
