Default 96 evinrude 130 V4 looper

Anyone know anything about these engines...reliability, efficiency, issues etc. I am looking at one online that has been used primarily in the Great Lakes but is local now. Looks great in pics and the guy sounds very knowledgable and guarantees you won't find one this good anywhere. Thanks.

Elijah

Those v4 loopers are 90 - 140hp are tough as nails. You are smart to shop for a freshwater motor too. The cape saltwater motors are generally busted crusty terds.

Yep, I had the first 140 looper sold by my local dealer back in 1985. Very strong engine, dependable and thirsty.

all of the above - plus their easy to fix either DIY or anybody knows how to fix them - parts are readily available too

must be de-carbed regualrly and they will run forever - thats not a negative as they all need it just OMC more often - should be #1 on the agenda

I think the first year was 1985 for the V-4 loopers, they actually came with the V-6 lower unit because that was the first year they measured the HP at the prop versus power head (I think it was the first year). OMC thought they needed the larger V-6 lower unit because of all the new power of the looper versus the cross fire. Two things about the first loopers back in 1985, they idled like crap but ran "like a scalded dog" and the first year VRO system had a filter in the oil tank about half the size of a match book, clogged very easy and fried the engines. OMC replaced them with a new larger filter. I put hundreds of hours on that engine.....many, many hundreds.

I traded it in on the first year 60 degree 175 hp OMC, the one with the optic ignition system, another outstanding engine!! Used it for three years and traded the boat.
