Default 13 whaler mini project

Today I bought for my younger son a 1973 whaler 13' from someone that lives 500 ft away from my driveway.

It had not been used since 2006 came with a junk trailer but it did come with a 2000 Johnson 40hp electric start with trim and tilt that looks in pretty good shape.

Needs to redo or replace the wood work and a major cleaning and wax job.

Needs a new tele flex cable

Best part I got it for $500

Was told that for most of it's life it was stored in a garage

The gel coat on the out side is in very good shape it just is just dirty and on one one side it has some rust stains from the yard sprinkler.

Was able to clean most of the dirty parts with degreaser but the rust stains were a little harder to get out. Any ideas on how to get it off easily?

With compound and wax it should look pretty good

The inside has some of the typical spider cracks but not much and with some degreaser it looks pretty nice.

The engine looks like it was taken care of with no rust and the fly wheel turns and looks like it has compression.

MY son is very excited and wants to get it in the water now.

Tomorrow I imagine I will have a busy day

Pics to follow

Good score Jorge...
Hit Lowes or Home Depot and pick-up a gallon of
Rust Aide.. Usually in the garden section for removing iron stains
from concrete and the like.. Spray it on and watch those pesky stains melt away... Then spray with clear water..

Ken nice job on the restore I think that mine will not need as much and I'm not into doing so much either

I do like the keel guard and now that I see it and knowing my son it's going on

Now Do you think that the electric winch is just a little over kill?...LOL

All of my fleet have a power winch !! I know I'm old school...
No Float-On's for me...

We would launch the Whaler in the surf in Daytona Beach / Ormond Beach
because of our drive on beach...
when chasing Manta Rays for Cobia..
Had a starboard box on the tounge to hold a 12V battery to winch her
back on the trailer which is detached from the tow vehicle..
Makes life easy!

Wow- thats a deal! Hasn't even been bottom painted!! Youve got a great project ahead and pretty soon to have one excited son (if he's not already) after he gets behind the wheel... boat ought to do mid 30's with that power. I had a friend with a 40 yamaha on his that would do about 38 mph or so. What a blast.

I've had three whalers and a carolina skiff and the 13' whaler is tops.

I personally think teak is the way to go on those interiors but we all know the cost of teak.

Good luck with it.

I looked on ebay and they sell a complete kit that looks like its just install it with no varnishing or anything but the one with "storage?" runs $900 yikes!!

http://compare.ebay.com/like/2309657...Types&var=sbar

But todays plan is to try and get the engine running and finish cleaning the hull and possibly start compound/ wax

West Marine sells a product called Off/On that removes rust and difficult staining. Read and follow directions, use eye protection.
