Is a 225 yamaha 2 stroker too much on 20ft?
I have the 20'4 master angler. I have had 200hp 2 stroke yamahas... I need to get a new one and its impossible to find a decent used 200hp these days. Is a 225 too heavy/too much? All advice is greatly appreciated.

What are the weights of the 200 & 225 Yamaha's you're considering?
At least you're not considering a 500 lb 4-stroke, but in general, lighter is better (for softer ride and lower minimum planing speed) on the 20's, since the 19/20' (19' bowrider/ 19'8" CC/Seafari) hulls were designed in the mid-60's for motors weighing 300 lbs or less. The newer Tracker-built 20'6" hulls are a bit heavier and should handle a little more weight on the transom, but the general consensus on this forum seems to be that about 400 lbs (200 hp 2-stroke Merc?) is a practical upper limit for decent ride and lower planing speed. Although it's rare to see a modern wider beam 20' boat with less than about 150-200 hp on it, I believe that simply indicates how heavy and inefficient those hull designs are! The VDH design develops more lift with less drag, so the 20' hulls perform very well with a lighter 90-130 hp motor, so anything over that just burns extra gas and is really not needed unless you run with extremely heavy loads or want WOT speeds over about 40 kts. If you spend much time offshore in seas of about 3' or more, you won't be able to use all that extra power anyway, as the 20' hull will start going airborne over about 20 kts in those conditions!

A friend recently bought a 20' cc and put a 200 yammi hdpi on it and it screams! The gps wasn't working, but, I guess we were running about 40 at half throttle in a 1-1/2' chop. PLENTY of motor.

if it's a old 2.6l 225 or a 225 2.6 excel you are fine. A 3.1l 225 that's way too much motor for a 20seacraft.

i have a 3.0 225 efi merc short shaft on my 1973 20 sf. It still self bails full of fuel sitting at the dock. As well, very minimal amount of water around the deck drain with me standing on one of the aft hatches. And you'll win a lot of races!

What type of numbers do you see with that combo? I have a 3.0 225 as well and have thought about putting it on my 20 sceptre since it has more weight forward. I know it is a little heavy but not to bad. It really pushes the limit on weight of a 20 but Gotta be fun to drive thoe
