Might have found my first seacraft, but.....
Hello All!
I've been looking for our first seacraft for quite some time now. Timings right financially so ready to pull the trigger. I've found what I think is a good candidate. But it has some issues I wanted to ask you opinions on. First and foremost question is its Title. Owner claims it is a 1979 20', but he bought without a title so he got a new title issued for it. Title shows it's a 2007, but numbers and names Match. Now. I snapped a pic of the hull ID which I will post here, if I'm reading it right it claims it's a 1975. But the number does match the title. Does this hull id look tampered with? Are any of these title issues cause for concerns? I believe the boat was an inboard 20' that was converted to outboard with bracket. I am pretty confident it is a Potter era Hull, whether it be 75 or 79 Boat is Original less the bracket and outboard. Decks are rock solid, which is awesome as I've looked at 4 others. All soft spots. This one is solid! Except the deck plate where the old motor cover used to be. That will need to be removed and cut off the transom and redone. I posted a pic of this section. The two side seats/hatches are solid. But the center contraption is no good. Transom rock solid. The outer hull when I push has some flex, which I've noticed on nearly all the other 20 and 23's I've looked at. Wasn't soft, but does move when I push. Is that pretty typical? Owner is firm on 5k. It has a running old 80's Johnson 120. Original fuel tank. No electronics. Our plans for the boat, are to fix any cosmetic issues, have some deck/transom work done where the motor cover was, sand, prime, repaint, hermco bracket and new Suzuki 140 Given those issues and the title issues, would you give it a green light? Or stay away? Or is he asking too much? |

Just a quick look and I would say hull id is compromised...I always get nervous when there are things that look shaky and don't seem right.

I agree. Too many out there that come and go with completely clear and coordinating paperwork if you're patient. Whether anything is actually wrong or not, the iffy hull ID / title year difference would push me away. The way I see it is it's already a old boat that'll require lots of work and maintenance, the last thing I want to do is end up battling with the state of title and registration.

Get it for 3500 and go to it - probably only reason its called a 2007 is because that's when the "new" title was issued. If S/N and title match go for it. Great boats - and yes the hull sides will flex a bit.

That don't look like the original Hin stamp, It looks like a copy over the original. It could be and looks like a real seacraft Hin from 75 tho. The ones I have all seen the numbers and letters are pressed inwards. Yours the stick outwards and the box is cocked sided. Looks like it either was redone or the really f-ed that one up at the factory. My guess is they made a molded the original Hin which would reverse it then applied it back on, and crocked at that. If it is not the original off of that hull it was molded off of another hull. The shape and font looks legit just reversed where some one popped it off of the original. I know where people have done this after changing transoms from the outside. I could of been where they just re-applied the number back to the hull after some repairs where they sanded it off. -OR- it could be where some one took a cast off another sc hull and stuck it on this one because they lost the tittle maybe. The only way you may could tell is to sand it off and try to see what shows under it. May not be anything left but it is possible there could be and it would show threw if lightly sanded..

I've looked at others that the owners were firm at 5 for, and this one is much nicer. We'll see. Going to look at a 23' Straight inboard tomorrow, my dream boat. I'll be into this 20 the same if not more then the 23 by the end of the refit so may pull the trigger on the 23. Thanks all! Hoping to be a real part of the seacraft owners club soon! |

The HIN was made with old school label maker and painted over...
Notice the hollow behind the broke out numbers.. Just my 2¢ worth ! Too many if's for me.

No bones is right. I might be less work to start with strips of wood and cold mold one like Shine, than deal with the Florida DMV to straighten the paperwork out on this one out.

Strictly going off of what I can see in the pics, assuming it has its original console. The console having the instrument panel puts it 73 to the 76ish. I believe most 73-74 used recessed 3" hinges for the hatches and pre and post those years strap hinges were used. The striped nonskid pattern puts it post 72. The I/O box shape and hull vents put it post 72. I think it's probably a 75 myself
