Salvage Run
Got our gag limit early and decided to visit an older wreck Saturday and scored a pristine porthole window. The frame should be ready to harvest in a year or so. The glass is 1” thick and overall about 50#s.

That’s Freaking Cool. What will happen next for one year?

the frame is in a steel hull boat and it's about a year a way from steel being rotted away enough to separate the brass ring frame from it.

That’s Bad Ass. So you may be able to recover the frame and what is left of the hardware? I was thinking the part you recovered had to sit in a bath of some type for a year. I had a firefighter go through a phase renewing old cast iron pans. They’d soak for days with a battery charger connected and fumes vaping inside the firehouse, back when I was a boss. Definitely interesting. That’s a cool find Ken!

Brass and bronze will leach a little salt for a year or two but there is no need to use electrolysis. If keep in the house with low humidity the portholes look good with just an acid wash to remove the marine growth. I'll pose of pic this weekend of the finished product.

Hey, Moose, I have some of the bronze pivot bolts and wing nuts, the ones that hold it shut, if you need them. They look like they may fit. let me know if you want a picture.

Good find Moose. You ever treasure hunt those old wrecks with a under water metal detector?

Here is what it looks like with a 20 minute soak at 50/50.
Uncle Boo, This window is about 22” and the frames have 1/2” eye nuts that I will harvest on the next run. There are 3 more frames left down there and one more window I can see but the glass is broken. Strick, most of the salvaging worth checking is way too deep for an affordable unit and the time constraints for searching are very short on open circuit gear.
