1975 Seacraft Sceptre Photos
Just thought Id post some photos from this summer of our new to us 1975 Seacraft Sceptre. We have upgraded from a 1975 17 mako that we ran hard for years in conditions that we probably shouldn't of been out in.
So far my brother and I have put 130+ hours (~550 total) on her (early 2000's) Merc 350 w/ Alpha Drive. One soft spot that we will most likely just deal with for the time being near the built-in tacklebox (is this considered a rare mod?) and had to reseal a rotten through-hull copper fitting that began to leak. No complaints, just a great boat that handles the sound chop amazingly. She'll be living on Cape Cod and the islands and would love any suggestions/recommendations or comments on these boats in general. Few Questions right off the bat: Where have people typically mounted their VHF's? Any recommendations for an arch manufacturer in the Cape Cod area? Any recommendations on how to replace the folding cabin top door? ours currently leaks at the folding seam. What would be the easiest/most cost effective (do-it-yourself) way to remove the 1970's shag carpet that lines the berth ceiling? Love this website and look forward to some responses!

Nice looking boat! I am in the middle of a Sceptre rebuild so seeing this gives a little inspiration.
No good answer for you on the VHF- maybe in the cabin overhead to starboard near opening or consider a handheld type only control where the actual radio box is hidden like Icom M400. Only a mic with wire at the helm area with a clip. On the cabin door, on prior boats , have wrapped a strip of white upholstery vinyl over the piano hinge when it's installed and bed in a small amount of white silicone- not perfect but can look clean if done right and keeps the water out. Had two boats in the past like this and generally kept the water from dripping through. I ripped all my carpet out and have to decide if going to paint the overhead or look into that thin foam overhead material with white vinyl .Just have to figure out best way to attach that will stay up in warm temps. When pulling out the carpet, found a corner and started pulling with pliers. Some fasteners like bow rail and windshield do pinch it in place. Also , it is difficult to remove above fwd bulkhead / anchor locker as think it was installed to the cap before the cap was fastened to the hull . Wasn't a big deal for me as I was starting a total re-do. You may not want to open that can of worms?

[/QUOTE] I think Bushwacker had a post you can search for about one benefit of the carpet on the cabin ceiling was to absorb or help prevent moisture condensing in the cabin after a cool night, even in south Fla where he lives.

Thanks Terry-guess it makes sense as an insulator but mine was stained and full of mildew , not to mention ugly/ dated so decided had to go. Maybe a lower pile version put back might be a lower cost solution. I’ve got bigger fish to fry right now with molding baitwells, panels etc. so time to think about it...

In my ‘76 Seafari it is probably a misnomer to call the thin stuff on the ceiling carpet. Bushwacker usually called it “mouse fur”. Mine sags a bit in one area, but otherwise pretty clean and not bad enough to replace. Best wishes

I have to make the same decision in my cabin. I ripped the headliner out. I'm probably going to paint it for now.

Thank you for the great responses!
As for the headliner, ours is stained and gross but any replacement work does seem like a can of worms so this may have to wait for the time being. What type of paint would you recommend? a typical topside paint? Does anyone have any photos they would like to share of their VHF setup? We usually run with the door closed so anything inside the cabin will likely not work.

I'm not sure what paint to use either. It's pretty narly under the headliner. Whatever I use I want to be able to glue a headliner to in case I decide to go that route later. I'm pretty sure interprotect would work but that might be overkill. Like to hear what others think too.
I can't help with the VHF. Mine is in the cabin but I'm moving it to the electronic box in my new hardtop. My stereo is flush-mounted on the combing board next to the helm. Where you would put a side-mount control. Maybe you can flush-mount the VHF in that spot?
