23 SC starboard drain up front
What's the consensus on what to do with the drain for casting deck well? While at rest the drain is underwater and from what I understand has been the culprit for many a SinkCraft. Fill it up and good riddance, or leave the way it is and watch carefully?
What have you done? Thanks.

Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
I've heard the same thing but didn't have one on my 23 Sceptre. I do however have one on my 20 and It was leaking when I bought it. Tough call.

Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
Rich,
I have one on the 23CC and we filled it in as we felt it was leaking between the hull and liner. However, any water that gets in that locker has to be pumped out manually. Huge pain and a mess. So, we've decided to install a stainless steel through hull in that spot and install a transom style tightening rubber/bronze plug.

Mine drains while underway by pulling the drain plug from the inside. Otherwise I keep the plug in all the times. Sinking, I've never heard that one before. I don't think I have or have had a leak problem between the innerliner and the hull as it's a plactic screw type thru hull fitting slapped together with 5200

Bill,
Where did you locate the drain? I was considering adding another drain but was unsure where to place it ... thanks!! |

Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
I replaced the old fitting with a new plastic one. Normally I leave the plug out. It fills a little bit at rest and all comes out when running, a little bonus trim action there. I tell you what though, it will sure hold a bunch of live bait although without a net they will make you look like a fool. (especially those finger mullet. Oh also if you leave the plug in when you are not using the boat that water will get pretty nasty after awhile. Pull the plug and let it douce it out, take her for a run with a friend and reinstall the plug. (thats how I do it anyways. ) Y'all have a good and safe weekend and catchemup!!!! Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
On my '77 23 I have recently replaced mine with a new brass sleve and 5200. The original seemed to be bedded with plain clear silicone so if it lasted these 30 years the 5200 will be there forever.I for some reason have a pair of through hull fittings also, one beside this drain that is capped off and an inspection port is cut in the bottom of the box and the other is below it .I replaced these fittings also and run a washdown /baitewll pump off of a seacock from the lower one. just my 2 cents.

Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
I put the hole just inboard of the old one making sure to clear the build up that supported the old one. The drain area was filled in with glass.

Re: 23 SC starboard drain up front
Rich-
I was taking on water this season and suspected that was the spot, so I hauled the boat and 5200'd the crap outta it and so far so good. I don't like it though, poor design. -Hooper |
