5200 removal

My airmar B60 20 degree thru hull transducer has failed after only 2 years and maybe 80 hours underway. Earlier this week it stopped working. I suspected the garmin 740s plug but no fix there. So than I simply touched the wire coming out of the ducer and it started to work until I touched it again. Today it won't work no mater what I do to the wire. I emailed airmar to see if they have any warranty. I bought it new through west marine. But back to my question, how do I remove this ducer with all the 5200? Anyone had to do this? Thanks for any help.

You can heat up a thin putty knife and slide it in between the transducer and the hull basically cutting the 5200. It's snotty going but it works

They sell a product at Worst Marine. De Bond or something like that. Expensive but worth the $$ IMO. Works too.

I have had to do this exact same thing and have the perfect solution for you. You will need some very fine, sharp hardwood wedges (sanded clothespins work great). You can use other materials but you can risk gelcoat damage if your not careful. First, remove the retaining spanner nut, gasket and washer. Now, carefully score any 5200 on the edge and trim off excess. Locate a good angle and tap in the sharp edge of the wedge with a plastic hammer or block of wood. Just barely get it the tip under the edge and walk away. In 15 minute intervals give the wedge a couple of taps. Repeat this until you as see some progress and start another wedge on the other side. Slow and steady is the key to progress without damage. My starting wedges are probably only .25" at the driving end.... Wedges are very powerful tools and I have used them to seperate everything from center consoles to engine brackets with no damage. There is no adhesive too strong but patients and moderation is key.

I did this on a huge transducer one time and found the debonder with a putty knife and sharp thin filet knife worked well and then a wedge. Not an easy job because it is hard to get the debonder in the joint at first but once you have a gap and working it slowly, pretty smooth. I was using heat on a filet knife at first and that was tough going. Harbor freight has nice and tough plastic wedges and you can sharpen those, no damage to the hull. Those wedges saved me separating transom skin from plywood.

I just looked at the B60, it has a narrow lip compared to what I was working at so the clothes pins should do the trick!

Did you purchase the "Plus Plan" on the 'ducer when you bought it? If so, you added another 2 years of performance guarantee to it.

All Airmar transducers come with a factory warranty of two years from the date of original manufacture. Without the "Plus Plan", however, you have to send it back to Airmar for service beyond 30 days after the purchase.

If you did buy the 2 year "Plus Plan", just take it back to any West Marine for up to 4 years after the purchase date, and West Marine will replace your transducer, no hassle guaranteed. Just buy a new "Plus Plan" on the replacement 'ducer for another 4 years of coverage and peace of mind.

The downside is you still have to remove the thing and take it in to West Marine.
