I'm not qualified to give you an answer to that question but my understanding is that they were sold in 88 or so. A lot of people talk about the "Potter" built boats up until 78, 79 or so but the way I've seen it from a lot of what's here and from those that I've talked to, when Bill Potter owned the company he established the reputation & quality of these boats. The next owner, CSY, maintained that level of quality and reputation.

It was at the next change of ownership that many more questions tend to come up...

So I think you're OK ...

(On the other hand - I imagine some of the difference has diminished if you need to do a quality restore on a 72 and a 90 boat too )

This is a problem I've had.I wondered for a long time if I had a GOOD ONE !? Well it seems that I do.I have completely gutted my '83 MA. 20' .Everything is where it should be and still intact. The foam in the stringers looks New.I'm putting a lot of $$$$$$ in Her.Ive completely filled every hole(Including)topdeck to hull,Console. Most of the ?'s can be answered the easy way !!!!
Just browse thru this sight!!!!!
The bad parts where the Transom & Foam under the gunnels, wood in console. All replaced. I also think 87 & later were changed ?

This thread has some good observations (not just cause I posted there too)...

http://www.classicseacraft.com/cgi-b...c;f=1;t=000254

Most boats consist of Design, Construction, and Maintenance/Upgrades.
SeaCraft is as well designed as any boat on the market.
The construction has been pretty good all the way along, but alot of rigging
in the newer boats is not as good as it could be.
Maint/Upgrades are different from boat to boat. A well kept SeaCraft,
or for that matter, any other quality boat, really dosent degrade over
time, only the motors get replaced, and rigging gets fixed/updated.
I have seen SeaCrafts that were abused/neglected and were junk.
As far as a bad year, I'm have not seen any specifics on construction or
rigging defects that were attributed to a specific year. I believe all
manufactures make a bad boat from time to time though. If a seacraft
or any other boat is 10 years old, has been fished like alot of them have
been (really hard), If there are any problems they will show up quickly.
Well, thats my 2 cents.

gulfstreaman:

I've seen several 86 to 89 SeaCrafts and can agree with the overwhelming consensus here that "they are all good boats".

My 89 with 900 hours was fished by a pro for 800 of those and the boat shows no defects except minor stress cracking. Having torn it down and removed the fuel tank, this is a serious hull outside and in. I'll be replacing some wood with starboard, but don't feel it's unexpected considering it sat out side for 10 years. The hull is dry and rock solid and rides like a dream.

I conceed the fit and finish issues on later models and will replace every single piece of hardware, but trust me they're all good boats.
