Default Water pickups and Seacocks

I want to put one of those bronze thru hull strainer pickups in my boat bottom for the washdown/livewell.The pickup is threaded like a plain thruhull, but it also has screw holes around the flange. The seacocks are the same deal, female pipe thread plus 3 or 4 screwholes in the flange. What is the proper way to do this? Would seem to me I could just drill the 1 hole, bed the pickup with 5200 and tighten down on the locknut just like a regular thruhull. But then whats the point of the flange on the seacock, why not just use a regular ball valve?Even if the hole pattern of the pickup and seacock matched, you can be sure that they wouldn't be aligned when you screwed the cock on tight. So, what do you guys do?
Bill

Billybob I'm doing the same thing now with my pick up. From the looks of the old one the holes on the pick up had screws in them to keep it facing forward and not turning around on you. These screws had nothing to do with the screws on the seacock they are separate. The flange on the seacock gives it support when you tighten it down helps to keep it from snapping off. On the inside I have a piece of plywood(6" x 6") epoxied on the inside of the hull that the thru hull runs through, once you bed and tighten the sea cock you install small screws(seacock flange) into the plywood and these keep the seacock from loosening. This is the set up I found before I took it apart and once I put a new piece of plywood in I'll seal it up. The only differance is I'll be using a regular thru hull with no pick up so I won't need the screws on the out side I'll just epoxy the holes from the old one in. Hope this helps.

Billybob. use 4200 in case you want to take it back out later. I am trying to remove one now that I put up in the forward hatch that I intended to use as a live well. I used a scoop with a ball valve on the inside the boat and 5200'd in place- believe me you dont need the little screws to keep it from turning. . The hold constantly fills up with water with no good way to remove it other than a 5 gallon bucket, but thats my problem. The higher dollar seacocks dont have the strainer built in, it is added on seperately. They ambettr quality than the ball valves though.I lvat thells thck eng at you can tighten down the strainer without any added reinforcement. Good luck, craig

BB,
For your use a regular thruhull with a ballvlave would be fine. The secocks with the flange are for big holes in your boat. Seein as the SC hull is only 3/8 of an inch thick, this would be overkill. But if you want to install them correctly, you need to dry fit all the pieces, including the 3/4 marine grade plywood backing plate, then mark the holes on the flange. These are drilled all the thru the hull and recessed and 5200 n place then nuts and washers on the inside.
I used the plate seacoks on my seawater intake on my big boat, for wash down and live well, just ball valves.
Good luck,
JW

Hey JW, not trying to start an argument or anything but 3/8's of an inch thick??? Mine is at least an inch and if I remember correctly maybe 1 1/4". The seacock that is/was original on my boat did not have, nor need a backing plate. I guess the layup of mine is different but 3/8" sounds awful thin to me for the hull. craig
