Default Flat-line clip placement

Well dolphin season is here and I have decided to install some flat-line clips for trolling. I am thinking of installing them on the transom on either side of the motor so that they will not get in the way. But if I put them there one may get ripped off by someone climbing on the swim platform, or they may be too close to my center "shotgun" line...SO Does anyone have experience with these?

Also, what is the best way to mount them?

Phan000, Pelican Hook(quick release) (I'm sure yachties / Sail'rs have a diff. name for it),Attatch it on a 15-24 *inch cable on the other end of the cable place a trolling clip.Your choice(roller - pancake) Attatch the pelican hook to your D lift/tow ring on the stearn. You can then move it anywhere! Unhook it stow it Take it on other boats etc. I'd send a picture of this but it will be a few years before I find "THAT" Box! I made these years ago & they still work the best. *Make sure the trolling clip hangs below the transom-When the Fish Strikes the clip will not Smack Your BEAUTIFUL Transom !Leave it out while runn'n too!
DO NOT USE PLASTIC COATED CABLE EVER for ANYTHING !!!!!!

Hmmm. You Fla. guys are so damn lucky with the fishing ! Mahi season ?! My boat is still covered and the first game fish here are 'lil flounder and in a while, striped bass season. The water is in the mid to hi 40's.

However, I am planning on doing some Mahi fishing in August when the Gulf Stream swings far enough North to bring some of the tropical waters within a 10-20 miles of shore ( sometimes some fingers of the Stream come right to shore )

I digress. I have thought of setting up a rig as mentioned and am new to the idea. A few questions.

You attach the "pelican hook" w/ the cable to ski/tow hook then do you have to mount the release clip to the transom under water somewhere ? - to keep the line and lure just under water ? Do I have this right ? Having a full-transom swim platform, how could I use a similar set-up ?

Thx

In the photos the Release clip has a swivel at the other end. This was for view only. Cable the clip & Pelican hook together with cable.I don't like Metal to metal Snap swivel to P hook. wear~tear etc.You don't need a swivel here, best not to have one.I've tried so many ways too. Clip the pelican hook to the Ski ring ,The aft rod holder rod's line will then go through the release clip. The line or clip will not enter the water. This keeps the line next to the water which benefits a Bou'Cou' of things. No smoke on the Line(Finiky Fish or WaHoo cut offs) ~Faster trolling~Less weed~No Wind Problems~Better Hook Setting on strike~Allows more lines to be trolled~ Run lures closer to boat 3rd wake or so. The down side is Smoker lures at slower speeds don't jump or smoke as well as rod tip or riggers.I could go on & on.I catch/Caught more Fish off this trolling setup than any other. Upon Strike the Rod will GET BENT ! & the clip will fall into the water & not Smack the Hull.If & when I get all the pieces back together I'll tie a Bone to the End of a Rod & let "HOOVER" go.A picture is worth a 1000 words!

I used a pair of S/S spacers and screwed an Aftco Gold Finger clip into the bottom of the rub rail. It swivals nice and does not bang the paint/gelcoat

I just took a large size ball bearing swivel and tied it to a good quality outrigger release and I just clip it to an outrigger snubber tie down ring that I installed on the corners of the aft coaming. They work great and are very accessible without having to bend overboard.

I haven't posted much on this forum but I'd like to jump in here. What do the flat line clips really accomplish. I love to dolphin fish but I'm not sure how they would help me. Can anyone comment? I'm planning on fishing saturday and dolphin is the primary target.

It also gives the bait a drop back effect that dolphins in particular seem to like.Just as they do on outriggers.
When they hit they have a few feet of free-lined bait before they feel any resistance on the line.

Good luck with the phins

I Don't feel too sorry for you NE folks as I am too busy pumping water out of my Florida room. Wilma gave us some slight modifications

And thanks for the imput on the clip placment.
