That looks like it is an "insert" piece. If it is, you'll need to take it out to the closest end (by appearances at the end by the motor well.)and then re-insert and trim off any excess. If it is too stiff to snap back in easily, try using a hair drier or a hot-air gun to soften it up so you can snap into place more easily.
I would suggest that you leave some on the end for a bit while the re-inserted piece settles/re-acclimates and then trim it to finish. JMHO. Good luck.

Usually the trim snaps in verses being slid into place. It flexes along the center line allowing the outer edges to be pinched enough so it will seat properly in the base section of the molded rubrail. You shouldn't need soap, but it won't hurt anything and if you gain some advantage by putting it along the edges, so be it!

remove the cap at the end,pull the slack out and put the bottom of the insert in its track then take a rubber mallet and smack the top of the insert starting at the corner and working to the motor. soapy water or wd-40 well help

if it's somewhat pliable i'd try to soap it with some ivory soap or wd-40 and work a couple scrapers along the edge to lock it back in......if its not pliable then heat it first

I have the same stuff. All I did was pinch the inner tabs together with one hand while following with the butt end of a screwdriver behind. It went in without much trouble at all. A couple of places needed the tip of the flathead to coax the inner tab back into the retainer, but, all in all, not much trouble. Oh yeah, I did it in hot weather so it was softer. Good luck.
