Sweet!
I'm a Florida boy, but the Air Force sent my family to Kansas for 4 years when I was 10 years old. I got a Remington 870 for my 11th birthday. We had Pheasant for Thanksgiving until I was 14. Takes a least 2 to feed a small family. And the local boys out there taught us to roast them covered with bacon strip to keep them moist...uuummm. That's how we do our turkeys to this day

I live in the mtns of Utah just east of SLC but shoot pheasant in eastern Utah. I prefer fresh lobster for T day but happily work with whats local when its this good.
Wrapping the breasts in bacon and grilling is awesome. Being careful not to bite down on steel shot though |

I grew up in Iowa, where the sky began. I love pheasant and quail cooked whole in pressure cookers w/ all the fixins' and so many options. Roasted bird wrapped with bacon is a can't miss. Still do turkeys that way. Ditto on the shot, lead was much easier on the molars. Looks like a fine hunt. Err, uh, are those a pair of hens on the truck?

Yes - Its a limited access club that stocks so they allow hens to be shot and have a longer season - our take that day was 7 roosters and 3 hens. I had the choice between overcast, heavy snow and windy at the house or 45F, light breeze, and sunny while getting some shooting in; not a difficult decision for me..

looks like a nice club by the field and the yield. I really miss pheasant hunting, especially with good bird dogs. Looks like you have a nice pointer, and what a yellow lab in the kennel? Nice hunt. Thanks for waking my memories. Bird pop is up 150% in Iowa this year. Been dismal for about 6-8 years. Hope I can get back and hunt with my brother.

Thanksgiving Vittles
Gosh darn it, now you guys are really mess'in me up. This site is gonna be the source of my early demise. I'm here read'in up on boot stripe widths, transom sealants, and polyfolicacidtaetehydrateatone and FLexpat, Capt. Lloyd and Gillie get me side tracked talking about bacon wrapped turkey!!!
When I went to the Cabbage Key Gathering I had a couple of helpings of Kmoose's blackend grouper on Friday night, then a pile of Mel's double basted Zatarain's fried grouper and a slab of Sandy's CSC encrusted Beef Wellington on Saturday night. By Sunday I was full as a tick. Now just about the time I get some slack in my size 28 jeans, you guys start going on about this BACON WRAPPED TURKEY. This is supposed to be a he-man, old salt, seafar'in kinda' site and not the "Cuisine Capers" blog. Me and the better 1/3 is try'in to cut back a little so we just got a turkey breast for today - but now we're wrapp'in it in bacon! If I hang with you guys too much longer I'll have the same lenght to girth proportions as a Warsaw Grouper!! Happy Thanksgiving and be thankful that one of our main concers in life is "boot stripe width"! |
