Default Hermco Bracket with 30" Motor

Will be mounting mine on my 23 and it looks like the 26" mounting height might be in conflict with my raised floor. Anyone have the Hermco twin with a 30 inch motor? Suzuki 300? I'm thinking I can raise the bracket 1.25 inches and clear the floor. Other than slightly affecting displacement of the bracket, are there any other considerations? I think I have heard of a person having to mount a jack plate on an installation but not sure why. I absolutely don't want to mess this up so I'm trying to find someone who has already climbed this hill.

Ken, my rig is a totally different animal, a 20 with a single Hermco bracket and 25" motor, but I ended up having to install a 3" setback jack plate and raise it all the way up! My AV plate is now about 6 1/8" above keel, with a total setback of 33", so my (AV plate height)/setback to get the AV plate above solid water works out to be 2.23" per foot of setback!

I think that number is primarily dependent on the shape of the water flow coming off the transom. Water flow trajectory is probably affected by boat weight, deadrise angle and speed all of which is different on your rig, but I suspect that if you used a trade factor of about 2" per foot of setback, you would be would be in the ball park. I cruise at 27-28 mph, with a WOT speed of about 42 with a heavy load and min planing speed of about 12 mph with a good 4B stern lifting prop and handling is good with no blowout on sudden hard turns. Only problem is I can't trim motor higher than about about 50% of max or it'll start to porpoise, but I think that's basically a CG/weight distribution issue, as more gear in the cabin eliminates that problem.

Don't know what the hole spacing and total range is on the Zuke, but my E-TEC has 4 holes spaced 0.75" apart, so total height adjustment range on my motor is 2.25". If you used the 2.0 inch/ft trade factor and mounted motor so you could move it down 1 hole and up a couple holes, I suspect you'd probably be able to get to optimum height.

I mounted mine as Don instructed. If memory serves it was 30" from keel but reach out to him. That said, my 2S Yam 250 was next to highest hole and ran great.

Was your bracket a "twin" or single motor bracket? Mine is a twin and call for a 26" mount from the keel with a 30" motor installation.

Thanks Denny, I know each boat is different and Don's brackets are made to install on a multitude of different hull designs and dead rises. In my experience the big Suzuki outboards like to run a little deeper due to the large diameter props they require and the very tight clearance between the props leading edge and the bottom of the AV plate. My goal is to be withing the adjustment range of the motor without any additional set back brackets as the ones that can hold my motor are generally heavy and large. I'm going to give Don a call and get his imput as I am sure he will have the most experience.

Twin and you're probably right. Memory and 6 years ago. I followed Dons installation recommendations.

I'm trying to work out the same thing on my bracket. How far up will your bracket be mounted relative to hull bottom? Then, how tall is the bracket, from bracket bottom to the the top of the clamping board/top? I have mine tall, trying to determine how much to cut it down, it's 30" now

Ken-

I just installed my Hermco twin bracket on my 79 23CC.
I hung my 30" Yamaha single this past week.
I followed Dons instructions to a T.
Pretty sure the bottom of the bracket is 3" away from the keel, and the top of the bracket is 26" from the bottom of the boat.
The mounting pad for the motor is an easy 6-8" higher than the bracket.
Don recommended 2nd or 3rd mounting hole.
I went with 2nd from the top.
Ill be spinning a 19" Rev4 (same prop from pre-bracket).

I have yet to float my boat (due to the current 20* temps in CT).
I can take any measurements you need while the boat is still in my shop.
