Default Pedestal on 23 sceptre

I've noticed this stainless plate in several pictures here and there on other boats.
This is on a 1978. Was this done then or added later because the screws
Were not holding? Thanks

Not original for sure. Very likely added due to screws striping out. A common problem on tall pedistals. I had the same problem and added a larger diameter round 3/8" support plate with screw holes on a larger diameter under the standard pedistal plate. The new location and screws are holding up fine.
