Transporting T-Top

I'm looking for a little help here.
I just purchased a 1987 SeaCraft Sport Fisherman in June from a buddie. I was looking for a T-top and found one from a Mako 231 that looks like it will fit perfectly. My problem is the T-Top is 2 hours away. Has anyone ever put a T-top on the roof of an SUV or maybe stuck it in the back and let it hang out the tailgate?
