Maybe I'm wrong but I think they actually keep the hull dry. Don't get me wrong, the bilge always stays wet but if you look at the vent channels they send an air flow directly to the tops of the box stringers and keep them dry. They also provide a place for the condensation to evaporate on hot days. If they are closed off theres no escape for the water and the hull turns into a steam chamber, at least here in south Fl
