Default Fuel Tank

I have a '79 MA with original console and no seats. Removed captains chairs and never replaced because had a lot of fuel/tank problems. Finally removed strainer on bottom of pickup tube and motor seems to get the fuel it needs. Hatch (cover) of 68 gal. fuel cell, most probably original, needs work(soft). Towards rear of hatch, in center, is a small, 4'' square inspection cover to inspect sending unit. This cover is bulging because the 90 degree "filler neck" appears too high to clear the hatch as well as the small inspection cover. Anyone else come across this problem/solution? Would this require a custom built fuel cell to replace? Thanks.
