Default Coaming for a SeaCraft20

I love my 2000 SeaCraft 20. I want to be able to run from Stonington,Ct to Montauk and Block Island. The 20 is really 19'6" and is not built especially big. Has anyone added a coaming to the inside of their gunnels to increase freeboard? Is it something that might help or is it totally unnecessary? Would appreciate some feedback. Don't know just how much wind and water I should take on on these trips or what the safe capability of the boat is.
Thank you for your input.
Dennis
