wierd grouper

Anybody know what this is? We took him out of 40 ft of water 30 miles south of Bimini, out of a small ledge that definitely wasn't his home. You could tell he felt very "out of place" Spots were much brighter when he was in the water.

Never seen one of these in the flesh, but I have a vague memory of seeing a pic of a deep water grouper that looked similar.

Any ideas?
