Seacret Compartment

I have an 18' Seacraft (1975) and in front of the center console there is a little area with a cover that slides over it and is held on by the leading edge of the center console. What is this? And can I fill the thing in with resin so it doesnt hold water? I looks like it might be set up for installing a fuel guage?
