RE-RE-doing my Scuppers
I replaced my scupper (Floor Drains) in my 23' before last season. When I bought the boat they were plastic. I ripped them out drilled and hogged out the 1" holes through the block of wood. I allowed the wood to dry and then patched the bottom and filled the tubes from the top with thickened epoxy. Then I re-drilled the 1" holes and installed the Moeller drain tubes. I thought this would fix all my problems...............
Well after running the boat for an entire season, I have come to the conclusion that I must again reconfigure the scuppers/drains. Water comes in constantly, at rest, underway, and on plane. It has got to the point where I have given up on them and stuck drain plugs in them and for the remainder of last season relied on 2 brand new 1100 GPH bilge pumps. After having my 25' SeaCraft sink on me at the dock I am more than a little bit worried. I'm thinking about doing away with the drain tubes and filling them in again. Then I would try to re-rout the scuppers out the stern, right at the waterline. Is this something I should try myself? I have limited skills, built a custom pilot house and already redid the drains once along with various other things. I am just afraid that if I drill holes through a 36 year old original transom that I might be opening a can of worms that I can't handle. What say you?

I have an I/o and have thought several times about running them out the transom. We have engine weight issues that the other cc's don't have.I think if you are filling up with water that much that if you do a bunch of measuring that you will find that you will not get good drainage if you put them at the waterline because that is where your deck is and it's why the water is coming in.
Something weird is going on if it is coming in while running-perhaps the blocks in front of the scups are missing? It should be draining while you are moving. |

Mine are out he transom with ping pong balls on the outside. Never have any water come in anymore. I say if your gonna redo them, do them that way.

hey Dan, I would say plug those floor drains up and go out the transom. I just replaced the deck on my inboard and i removed them and the blocks that they were drilled through. mine would only let water in if i had at least two guys in the back, never underway but most of the times i kept them plugged up.I'm going to put my new scuppers through the transom with 2 1/2'' PVC pipe with exhaust flaps on the outside and screw in plugs on the inside. I did this setup on my brothers 20' seacraft and haven't had any problems. when i stop being so lazy I'll post up some pics of the build.

Dan I did mine thru the transom. I used 2 inch pvc and the large ray-bud ping pongs 3 inch on the outside. On the inside I put a threaded pvc union so I could plug them this also gave me a ridge or neck that fit nice on the inside of the transom bulkhead. Make sure if you go this route that you mount the ball seals the right way I called ray-bud to answer this question as there was some conflicting ideas as to how to mount them.. I will look to see if I have any photo's. Also look on this site as their has been nice ones done with the stainless thru hull fittings that have flappers. Discount Marine in Bradenton Fla had some really nice ones that were 3 inch in diameter with the flappers I toyed with using them as well. Hope this help's and does not confuse you it is a hard choice what to do.. I like the idea of being able to drain water off the deck fast when you take a big greenie over the bow LOL..

So even if you dont have a raised deck (original height) it is still possible to route the scuppers out the transom?

I have the same issue at rest, but not underway. Has anyone tried a sump pump style in-line check valve on these?
