Water spots on windshield

Since my resto (10) years ago, including windshield glass, I've noticed really bad water spots on my windshield and side windows. Really bad. Nothing removed them. I tried muriatic acid, CLR, a few 'specialty' products. Even a razor blade. Nothing even dented it.

Except one thing; a compounding wheel with a wool pad and 3M heavy duty, compound… It did it fairly easy. Only area that still has the spots are the lower pcs of glass where I cannot reach with the wheel.

Hope this helps someone. I'm going to use RainX from now on.

Good tip. Have you noticed any swirls/scratches left by the compound? I've also used 3M Finesse-it to remove hard water spots - much less cut than the heavy duty compound and worked very effectively. For a sealer, take a look at Aquapel. Forms a bond with the glass that lasts a lot longer than a RainX application. I've found that RainX needs to be reapplied after a few washes, especially in salt water conditions.

There's also a very effective 2 part system that I can't remember the name of. Part 1 is like a liquid compound that you apply with a scotch brite type pad, then wash off, and part 2 is similar to Aquapel in that it forms a chemical bond to the glass for a water repellent finish that is supposed to lasts at least a couple seasons. Maybe someone can help with the name.

No swirls.
I did use Bar Keepers Friend with a 0000 stainless steel pad on one pc of glass - scratched the cr*p out of it - not sure if it was the pad alone or the combo of the 'oxicsylic' acid in the BKF. I then had to buff the heck out of that section with the 3M compound and then Finesse It. Your point about the Finesse It is a good one - it really is a great finisher and makes the glass exceptionally clear.

I'll look for that AquaPel - as this was a decent amount of work mostly because you're working around a lot of obstacles… Don't want to do it again any time soon !

I've used it with a sponge... with good results. No scratches. I have a well here and the water is very hard. Rain-x is a must over here. Glad you got it figured out. I've heard good stuff about the 3M Finesse.

I'll give the barkeepers/sponge a shot - onto the next project; retrofitting existing isinglass / hardtop 'just right' and then bolting the hardtop onto the boat.

Vinegar kills water spots. Clean with vinegar as soon as you notice water spots, then apply wax or rain x. I prefer collonites fleet was (paste).
