Default Tackle Storage Ideas

Flipping through some of the off-the-shelf tackle storage solutions that are out there and given how storage space is already at a premium, I had some thoughts cross my mind.

Seeing as though some of you talented folks opt to build in-deck fish boxes when doing your rebuilds, has anyone done or considered converting the above deck (under helm seating) fish boxes on later 23 Sceptres into tackle storage or a tackle station?

Also, if closing in the transom or modifying the existing, what if any options have you gone with if installing a setup back there?

While I’m far from the best designer and fiberglasser here. No one’s responded so here’s what I did:

I looked at this until my eyes went crossed on my Seafari 25. I tried to see what was done from factory and improve on that while keeping it representative of the period. I thought about side doors on my transom, flip out tackle boxes under the gunnels. Making a seat base that doubled as tackle center… the list goes on. I just didn’t come up with anything that I liked for the money.

Check out 79 brochure on sceptre 23 for some pics of old days

Also in this one you see some more ideas but not sure how much room you have.

What kind of fishing you doing? I do mainly high speed trolling and live baits. So my setup is fairly straight forward. I have 2 gaffs mounted under gunnels. As well as a baton and a Japanese fish killer. 1 bag with my lures in it. My tools are mounted on deck. I’m working on a teak rocket launcher so will probably move them to there for my knives, pliers, etc. don’t plan on a drawer

I looked at all kinds of stuff and I’m sure I can go fancier but the cost is crazy and I could spend that on new rods and reels. Not too mention gas

I have a cabelas bag with my lures in it and all my rigging. I’m planning on getting one of these soon so I can just hop on and off with most of my gear as I go out with others regularly.

Kind of big but my wahoo (ono) and ahi (yellowfin) lures are pretty big here. I advocate simple and cheap when possible.

I definitely get what you mean. The 79' brochure has something very similar to what I'm asking about. The 80's Sceptres had fish boxes in those spots under the helm seats, and a runway of a cockpit. I could see using one of them for their actual purpose, but the other typically just becomes dry storage anyhow.

I'm growing tired of my current routine, which involves a couple of heavy duty locking Tupperware type bins with all my Plano style trays in them. Not fun fumbling around with all of them and digging through everything, maintaining organization is a tall task. A travel type tote would not be the best as it would be either too heavy or too many to carry along with the rest of my gear (rods, electronics) that don't stay at the boat.

We do a lot of bottom fishing, some trolling for bass, live lining, and hopefully at some point (once outfitted for it) do some tuna hunting. Tackle runs the gamut basically, lots of lead as well. Having all the gear in designated spots neatly stowed and easy to access would be a thing of beauty.

This website was what got me thinking:
https://www.boatoutfitters.com/storage
Something like the products they carry would be a nice drop-in solution, they have so many options depending on size requirements and layout. I wanted to see if anyone made use of anything like this or came up with something custom.

I feel you brother. I’ve been wondering the same thing and I mostly get answers like using a 5gallon bucket with pvc tubes, ziplock bags.., and yes boat outfitters has some cool stuff.

I looked over several boat manufacturers too. If you figure out something awesome please post as I’m wondering the same thing too. I’m going bag and stuff to get on water and get a better plan after some usage. but if I’m guessing it would include:

Seat pedestals- tackle storage and trash can?
Teak racks- make door fronts or something for under them.
Open up storage on transom
Rocket launcher- tools

Not sure if you have seen this option, but it looks like our 75 Sceptre came with a tackle center option behind the passenger side. We use it for miscellaneous tackle storage and an additional seat.

I cant find any pictures of it open, but feel free to PM me and I can take some when Im back at the shop. I haven't seen any other boats with this option, so maybe it was a custom job from a previous owner.

I appreciate it. That alone would probably take most of the load off of the issue, unfortunately 80's Sceptre models didn't have any other option aside from the integral fish boxes from what I believe: See below...

The boxes have a significant footprint and I couldn't possible see a scenario for needing both of them as fish boxes or even one cooler one fish box. Again, dry storage is most likely use, so elimination thereof completely may be somewhat detrimental to storage on these boats as a whole...
