Re: 23 inboard restoration complete
Great looking boat, is that a 350 EFI?
The numbers should improve drastically with the right tran. Teak, I agree looks the best if you can maintain it to look good and your's is pretty. Enjoy.

Re: 23 inboard restoration complete
hey rip- im surprised to hear it has a 1-1 tranny in her. most that i have seen or know about have a 1.51-1. It shouldnt be real hard to modify yours, I did my old mako back in the eighties that had the same set-up (1-1, right hand 13/13 wheel.) and replaced it with a 1.5-1 so I could also turn a bigger wheel. Keep in mind you will go from a right hand wheel (if your motor is standard rotation) to a left hand wheel with the extra gear). Wheel size is subject to debate here but the original on some of our boats (mine is a 78'- was 16/17. The process to change to the largertranny basically consisted of shortening the shaft and having it re-keyed( dont remember but on the other boat is was around 6 inches, i measured about 20 times before I had it cut ) to compensate for the extra gear in the transmission. I also replaced my motor mounts before moving the whole motor forward prior to realigning the shaft coupling where it mates to the transmission coupling. a couple other things to think about would be replacing your cutless bearing while your shaft is removed and also repacking your stuffing box. -(easy stuff)anyways- all thats neither here nor there as again you have one beautiful boat!!! craig

Re: 23 inboard restoration complete
I'm hoping it won't be too much of an issue replacing the transmission, but it's not going to happen this summer. We're just going to deal with the slow cruise speed for now and not risk loosing any time out on the water.
Everytime it gets snotty out, I forget about the loss of cruise speed and enjoy the ride. I heard that Seacrafts are wet boats, but I haven't had to use the wing curtains once, even in a quartering sea. I can't believe how dry this boat is, I think with the motor placed in the center of the hull, it really helps the ride. In a head sea, I just give it more tab and she cuts through without pounding at all. |

Re: 23 inboard restoration complete
Looks great. I like the idea of the T-Top being connected totally to the console....can you swing the whole thing to get at the engine? Mine is bolted to the deck with a remove-able connection to the console, but it allows for some sway on rough days...
Your new engine should be left handed and you should go 1.5:1 on the new tranny. I just tweaked my 4 blade again to 16x16 with a slight cup...I'll post results.

Re: 23 inboard restoration complete
The whole center center console/T-top does fold forward and rests on the bow for full access to the engine. The T-Top was made my J&J Marine, it was expensive, but I am very impressed by the quality and perfect welds. They make the towers for most of the new Cabo's in the Northeast.
Jeff, I would love to see your performance numbers, and yes I need a 1.5:1 tranny. |

Hey Luke - boat looks real nice. Is your dad running it instead of the bigger boat? Or did you switch careers?

Re: Beautiful Job -
We're gonna run both boats. The Blackfin will be used for traditional charters six person max, mostly trolling for stripers. We're going to do custom trips with less people with the Seacraft and more live bait, eels, casting etc...
I might even do run & gun trips for sbft if the need is there. |
