Paint ques.

I want to paint my 1970 20 cc. hull down to waterline. It is now yellow. I would like to roll & brush , I dont want to get involved in spray, ANYONE know of a light yellow paint for this type of job,the orig. yellow is a bit dark like the Seatow boats . I want the newer look light yellow .any imput on color or rolling on paint would be helpfull, Also do I need a primer coat . THANKS & HAPPY NEW YEAR Joe R.

Hey Joe, I think the yellow you are looking for is fighting lady yellow. If you look at Hammers 20 you will see what fighting lady yellow looks like. I am no expert on paint but i would also like to see any info on painting

There seems to be 2 yellows - fighting lady yellow (one of my favorites) and the lighter yellow on Seacrafts and there was a mustard yellow color - like you said more like Seatow's...

I'd be interested to know how many members of this site have a boat whose original color was the SeaCraft "mustard"?! My 1971 20' started it's life that way (now painted over with white).

It certainly was a "look"...

I originally didn't like that color, but it seem to have grown on me, I think I'm going to keep it that way.

FYI. Mr, P's wife picked out that color apparently.

Joe ....Sterling paints www.detcomarine.com ?? Has a version of Fighting lady called "Lemon Mist" .... Sterling is suppose (talk to fellowship) to be very easy to apply via roll and tip rendering "professional" results .... there tech staff is incredible (talked to them and emailed many times) I've not had the same luck with the "other" paint company.....

The lemon mist seems to be a little brighter than FLY ...

I was thinking of the "yellow" also ... but maybe "cutting" either Fighting lady or Lemon mist with some bright white to "pale it" out even more .... But, In my case, I think the original Gel coat may be here to stay .... getting way to many complements on it !!! [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

FLY is the one I am looking for in a 1 or 2 part to roll on, my friend from the marina is out back shrink wrapping her right now. he is trying to talk me out of painting it he thinks the orig gellcoat looks very good. I guess its me I see the small dings and scraches more than anyone else. Ihave to go out now and pick his brain before he done shrink wrapping. Thanks for the inputs .Joe R.

The thing about paint is that it will not wear as well as gel coat …especially topside....flip note... gel coat means wax and compound on occasion but can be repaired and with a good glass guy that can color match, you'll never see the repair....the other thing I have noticed .... and a friend who is a broker also has seen ... people seem to prefer original gel coat for some reason .... and I think they get scared by paint ... especially when they hear what it cost to re-paint the boat ....

example ...the Viking I worked on usually had the transom painted once a year .... inevitably a "green" fish would thrash about and leave a battle scar or three ....but that’s a good thing [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] as long as I wasn’t paying for it ....but If you've got a boat like that painting the transom, or anything else for that matter, is pocket change…..

If the original gel coat is in "good shape", by all means, you should think seriously about repairing the scratches, wet sanding and buffing. I don't care what anyone says, if you paint it, you'll have to wet sand and buff anyway.
