Inboard hydraulic steering setup

Have any of you IB guys replaced or upgraded your Hydraulic steering system recently? If so, please share any specs. or components that you used. West Marine has a "package" system, but not cheap and a 20% re-stocking fee to return if it doesn't do the trick... There are so many different combinations it's makin my head spin.... I would check out Hynautics web site or teleflex Seastar website for the info. I have had Hynautics on my big rig for 33 years, they even sold me replacement parts at cost because my origianal parts were obsolete.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been on line checking this out. Looks like a Sea Star system so far. I'd love an auto pilot...so double the budget...

Hey Jeff, I put a seastar on mine last spring. Thats the project I made the mistake of measuring once and installing twice [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img] . Anyways I will have to find a boat-us catalog to tell you which set-up I used if you want to know. The hardest thing getting used to for me was the extra turn of the wheelI believe from 3 turns lock to lock to 4 turns. Its awesome though!!! Ill look at work tomorrow-

I replaced my steering (20' CC) with a Hynautics system. I belive it is undersized and does not perform as well as it should. That being said, the biggest thing I overlooked was the tubing setup. Instead of having a fixed piston and 2 fixed lines to it, the piston moves side to side as the wheel is turned. Each end has a line going into it which means I need extra tubing to allow for play (similar to the control cables). I would make sure whatever setup you go with that is ample sized for the motor and that the piston stays in a fixed position allowing for fixed length tubing.

Craig, thanks, if you can tell me which SeaStar cylinder you used it would help, I referenced Sea Star #1-HC5312, Model BA125-7ATM with 3/8" Nylon reinforced hose with SeaStar 1 Standard Helm...sound familiar???

Hey Jeff, thats the one I ordered. I just checked it in my boat us catalog. They have all the specs on the different helms and cylinders combinations. Any other questions I might be able to help with let me know. I did have a little trouble getting it bled down and it is a messy job to boot.Routing the tubing I ended up having togo thru the same hole on the starboard side that wiring etc, goes thru and then down centerline in order to make it fit/work good. My bilge blower on the port side also had to be moved slightly to allow the cylinder rod to move. Good luck- you will be very happy you did it,I was. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]
