Default Info on 222 HILINER??

Hey guys, ive been a lurker on this site for years and also a member of thehulltruth etc etc. and have been looking for another rebuild project for myself. I have done a 22 north american (sea ox) conversion to pilot house boat and now am looking to do something a little more refined and sleek and fast. I had settled on a 20 seacraft but have recently had a change of heart when i stumbled upon a 222 hiliner which i believe was on this site some time ago as well as the hull truth.

I am looking for info on these boats. Does anyone know where the molds are now? I have seen the geoff devine website and there is some good info on there. However i find that most of the best info is word of mouth kind of info from guys who know the boats or were around when they were introduced. Im only a young buck and wasnt around for the inception of the boat in the early 70's. If anyone has any info on this hull or the origins, whose owned the molds, bad hull runs, etc... Id love to know as much as i can before i dive into this project. Thanks guys, sorry this isnt directly seacraft related. Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your project!! The Hiliner 222 Gypsy is one of my favorite boats. It's very close to the Bertram 20 Bahia Mar. Boston Whaler built a few boats with the hiliner 222 molds and called it the Yankee Voyager (only non-vee hull BW). Supposedly Nauset Marine in Chatham has the molds. I read somewhere else that another set of molds went south to Florida.

As you probably already know it's a C Raymond Hunt design. 24 degree deadrise, Foam filled hull, fiberglass stringers, monel fuel tanks, etc. Hiliner 222's were very expensive high end boats.

Don't be afraid to email C. Raymond Hunt and Associates for information on the hull. They might have line drawings or other information. John Deknatel responded to my email about the v20 stepift several years ago.

Here's a pic of a beat down hiliner 222 Gypsy.

Good looking boat. Every time I see a Seafari or a small Bahia Mar I wonder why that style of boat isn't more popular. Perfect for roughriders that are offshore afflicted. Particularly in 22-23' size.

You know, now that I see this boat I realize that some people have been passing them off as customized Bertram Bahiamars in the Boat Trader. Just last year I saw a nice one for sale. Was this boat rebuilt or trashed?

Hooligan,
Not sure if you are set on the 222 Gypsy, but there is a nice 222 Sportsman model refurb candidate for sale really on cheap on both FFSW and Reel-Time (might be on THT too). The Sportsman is the Bertram 20 Moppie equivalent. It might be worth checking out.

Shrimpin' thanks for the pics of another hiliner. Ive been looking high and low and havent been able to see many pictures. My plan is to turn the boat into a center console with t-top and bracket/ outboard the thing. I cannot decide whether or not to use nida on the decks or not, and on this redo, im not building my own tank like i did on the last one. Though i had no leaks, i was so paranoid it was going to turn into a soggy newspaper below decks that i ripped it out this fall and crushed it up with a bobcat- and the verdict? Well there was only minor peeling of the west system topcoat i put over the polyester resin and glass. The tank was still in great shape... nonetheless im doing a poly tank(s) by moeller or todd on this one, ill leave the tank building to the pros.

Scott M, i think the boat you are speaking of is the one i bought. It was on hulltruth and this site a while back. The hull is in great shape and it looks like the whole package probably doesnt have more than a few hundred hours on it- its in excellent shape. Finally im making the move to a deep v...

thanks so far for the info guys. hooligan.

Hooligan, I've had a restored one on here and THT (search the for sale section) for sale forever. My current plan is to hang on to it. They are amazing riding boats with hulls that plane off very flat. Easy boat to drive. I'm also thinking of converting mine to a bracket/outboard. I've heard Nauset Marine in Orleans, Ma has at least one set of molds. These boats were built heavily with thick glass. Great restore projects. Send me your email and I'll share some pics of mine. Good luck, Steve
