Several different projects part # 1 & 2
Since I finished my 23 CC boat in 6/02 I have done several little projects to tweak my boat just a little bit here and there. I never posted any of these little projects just did my thing and moved on.
Well I decided to post some pictures of some the work I have done since then. Scupper change – as time went on and I did different things regarding my scuppers from the Vortex project as some of you guys still remember I then went with a inline scupper which I really wasn’t all that happy with due to the space between the transom and the inner liner is very limited for a inline scupper so I finally went with a Perko Marine 1 ˝” brass chrome coated scupper. I filled in the through the hull scupper with glass and wood and epoxy and went out the stern. Here are some pictures of that project. Hi Oldfielder;
That’s a great question and why some guys are now raising the decks on the 23’ like the guys on the 20’ have been doing. My water line on the outside of the boat is approx. where the 90 degree angle on the trim tab hinge plate is when I have a full tank of gas and 2 guys in the boat. I have one 225 outboard 2 stroke on the back. On the inside of the boat when I had the through the bottom of the hull original scuppers you could see the water approx 1’ down from the top of the tube inside the deck. Those scupper tubes were in the middle of the square pocket in the corners of the deck. If two guys were standing close to the scupper in the bay you still were OK But if you were drift fishing and two or three guys were standing close to the scupper trying to gaff a fish in 1-3’ or bigger seas water would come in and get peoples feet wet. If sea conditions were bad and I had 3 guys in the boat drift fishing we would have to fish one guy in the bow of the boat just to keep in from taking on some water or I would pull out the sea anchor/drift bag to have the bow of the boat to the seas. That’s why I did the Vortex thread those things really worked well but they were not built to last long and restricted the flow of water out of the boat. Saying all that when I drift fish and guys are in the back the water line will be some times way under the “at rest point” and sometimes way above that “at rest point”. No water back flushes these new scuppers. Saying all that If I were to build another 23’ SeaCraft and I were going to put 2 motors on a bracket I would raise the deck during the re built so I could raise those Perko scuppers 2”, 3” or possibly 4” higher depending on how high I raised my deck. Yeah-That's what I figured. With the i/o, I don't know if my differential between deck and waterline is as great as yours-I've been debating going out the transom for about two years, but I just don't like those things sitting underwater most of the time.

Ok, Ken did you cross angle the tubes? I redid my deck after my Dad died in May and put him in the old CAPTAIN World in June and started thinking along your lines on scupper's, Craig Miles and I have the same Inboard here in Va, I was wondering on the plumbing you just did, Was it straight across or did you move something over for it to work. I was thinking with the Inboard to go from one side to the other. What are your thoughts on this with 105 gallon's of gas? at the Tramson??

Sounds like you are wanting to just use one scupper going out the center of the transom and two drain locations inside the boat. My thought on that is a big Maybe it would work and Maybe not. You would loose the straight line design that aids the scupper to open and let the water out, plus you could be just sloshing water from the port to starboard side of the boat if there isn’t enough pressure to plus it through the scupper, and if debree goes in you drain hole like a leaf from a tree you have no way to clear it like you could with a straight line directly out the back. Ken,
No I was thinking about installing similiar to you, but not sure what the clearance would be and was wondering about using a similiar set-up as you did but run the hoses across the boat so when you are on one side the side you are on it is on the other side of the boat. How tight are your hoses to the fitting's?

Knot Working
The space between the scupper tube and the drain tube is 6” not a lot of room. I ended using flexible sink drain pipe hose it’s looks kind of like a flexible drinking straw. When you push it together it’s smaller and then you can expand its length. It is made of a plastic material not rubber. I tried regular 1 ˝” marine tubing but the stuff was to thick for me be bend and still have a good grip on both pipes. FellowShip Just for the Grins |
