Default Boat wiring?

I'm coming to the final stages of a seacraft build, with a lot of thanks to the site, and I'm thinking about wiring. I've wiring smaller skiffs and kept everything clean and simple with no problems and years of service. The boat is a 23 inboard and when it came apart everything: strut, rudder, shaft, through hulls were all "bonded" to the motor, I think. The boat will be getting some decent electronics, which I don't know if they would also be bonded? Could anybody shed some light on this situation? Or point me in the right direction. My old way was red to red, black to black, solder, shrink wrap, wire tye done! Thanks for all the help.

I would highly recommend Nigel Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" about $32 at amazon.com and very likely available at your local public library. If those aren't an option PM me and I'll scan the chapter on bonding and galvanic corrosion and e-mail it to you. It's a must read, I think.

I think many would agree it's an indispensable book for any mariner's library. It definitely helped me with my rewiring. Good luck with the project and avoid taking shortcuts. Bad wiring can screw up your own boat as well as your neighbors.

Another good book, and a lot less expensive.

Understanding Boat Wiring. By John Payne.

Also check out this thread.

You might want to check this out.

Also, I couldn't recommend any referrence source more than Nigel Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual". It is truly a book that will give you virtually everything you need PLUS the explanation of why it is important. It might seem more than you need to know, but knowing what you need to do is only half the story. We all need to have a working understanding of why we need it that way.

Best of luck and don't be afraid to ask the questions. It will save huge $$$$ in the long run.

I re wired my inboard over 10 years ago and have been very pleased with the results.
Every connection was done with anchor connectors that have heat shrink and glue. I went back to bonding everything after noting some pitting on my rudder after a few years. Good luck with your project!
