Default 2000 evinrude ficht?

Hi, I found a 20ft MA that has been totally rebuilt but it has a 2000 175 evinrude ficht on the back. I've read all the bad things about this motor and I'm alittle worried. Has anyone here had any good luck with this motor? Should I walk away...hhhmm
I know that the 98 and 99 models are the ones that had big problems, but i've also heard bad things about the 2000 models. I thought of buying the boat and repowering but Not sure about spending the extra money right now.
bit of a dilemma I have here.
Dan

Not that I want to send you to another web site, but did you do a search on THT site?

I don't like all there ranting and raving over there but there are so many members that once you get through the BS you can find out some good info.

Most of the problems were due to poor computer programing issues. Fitch and E-tech are bascially the same engines but BRP figured out the problems. I would check if the engine has a BRP module. Can't remember exacty when they took over... Even if it's a good engine you'll forever have to deal with the bad reputation. Or, use it to your advantage.

After my THT research a few years ago, late 02 and later are BRP built. All motors that hadn't left the plant after OMC, but were OMC built were gone over prior to late 02 as well. Late 02 is were I would start!

98/99 150/175 didn't have the pinned heads, had a air cooled computer, and old style injectors.

dfitechnoligies has pics of these parts so you know what you are looking for and what to run away from . . . I've found lots of folks advertising their 98 or 99 ficht as a 2000 w/low hours, so beware. I had a 99 150 ficht w/ the air cooled computer and swapped it for a 1981 Merc 225 (best decision I ever made).

I rigged a 2007 Etec 200 HO this winter . . . and it looks nearly identical to the 200 Fichts.

THT is worthless for info, very few have a clue about anything but post anyway cause they heard it somewhere. Some of the models had issues some did not, I don't remember which ones and which HP. 2 people that might give good info is Dunk, who is on THT and does know, or maybe call Mike at American Marine. He was a dealer during the time frame 727 938 9796. Even calling DFI Tech as mentioned they may be able to help too. Bottom line is don't pay much for it one way or the other and take what it gives you.

My info was from Dunk on THT. Idiot factor is high on THT.

What he was aying was any of the BRP motors were very good - there were some earlier models that didn't have many issues either. It was kinda certain HP motors had a bunch and some worked out pretty good - as I said just don't pay squat for it a take what it gives and check with DFI Tech on the cost of an EMM
