Signature Paints

Gents: So it's been a while since I painted a boat so I've been reading up on paints. Signature paints has my interest but I'm a bit skeptical about the quantities Tom sez I need for my project. His estimate is half of what other brands recommend for coverage. Has anyone used this paint recently and were the quantities Tom estimated enough to complete your project? I've read some good reviews on this board - is it really that good for the unit price? Any observations?

Recently painted my boat with Signature. Tom knows his stuff. I was very satisfied with the results. He includes everything you will need to do the job.
Highly recommend.

I painted the bottom of my boat with Signature Finish paint about 5 years ago and it's held up very well; boat has been left in water for as long as 2 weeks with no problems. Tom definitely knows his stuff and I'd have no problems going with whatever he recommends. As far as I know, Signature and the stuff Island Trader used (Insignia) are the only urethanes that will hold up below the waterline. Terry had his professionally sprayed, but Signature is very user friendly, is easily repaired and buffed out, and is well suited to a do-it-yourself application.

I've used SF on several projects with great results. Tom is very helpful and is usually accurate with what he recommends.

I just did mine as well and turned out great, also using his honey teak and it is a great product as well.

I bought Signature paint from Tom but have not applied it yet. I am still debating if a high build primer is required over all the fairing compound and what type of primer is compatible.

it seems like you would need a lot of paint to fill in a tiny holes.

The paint is quite thin if mixed per his standard 8-2-4 formula for brush/roll & tip application, so it takes 3 coats for good coverage. It flows into small cracks very well but if you're worried about pin holes, a high build primer might make sense if it's cheaper than the paint, which I suspect it is.

I applied it over three coats of thick Interprotect epoxy barrier coat on the bottom which I had sanded down pretty good between coats because I had lots of pin holes in the gel coat from soda blasting. The barrier coat filled those pretty well and made a good guide coat because I had to do lots of filling/faring between coats to get the bottom smooth. The soda blasting left a very uneven surface, but it looked good after last coat of paint!

I have unopened, unused awl grip 545 primer and converter that I didn't use if your interested.
