Casting Deck Hatch Re-core

I am in process of recoring the Cast deck hatch. I removed the core and ground down the thin layer of wood and fiber glass edges. What is the recomended core replacment bevel angle and Fiberglass layup to do this restoration corectly?. Also, should I use Epoxy or Polyester?

If you want to make the boat heaver use plywood with epoxy, if you like it lighter use composite and epoxy, I personally like heavy boats. Epoxy is more user friendly for drying time and it bonds better to repair work that polyester

Fellow-Ship. I, m looking at using coosa Bluewater with Epoxy. What glassing schedule should I use to lay it up? Also I was thinking of using the white pigment in the Epoxy on the last layer to give it a finished look. Does this sound like it will work or should i just Gelcoat the back side of the hatch?

As for the lay up I used “If I can remember correctly” after epoxing the plywood onto the hatch one layer of biaxial cloth that I had laying around and then some mat after that some filler to sand some. I didn’t over do this then I painted it with Sterling paint like I did on the inside of the hull.

Looks like you have the same problem as I do with the hing bolts rubing/hiting on the lip. I was thinking about longer hinges so the bolts go through the core. As for the layup. Did you put mat between the core and the hatch or did you just epoxy them together?

I just epoxyed them together, this job was kind of no big deal compared to some of the rest of my project. I know I could have finished it up better but I was not into the cosmetics of what the underside of a hatch looked like when I did my boat. If I had to do it all over again I would probably spend more time on the pretty pretty side of the job. I was more concerned on getting the boat splashed and getting her BLOODY every weekend back then.

How was your experience with Sterling paint? I am considering painting my 20 with it when I am done. I hear lots of good things about it. Since I don't own or have access to a gun and a spray booth the roll and tip method sounds like a good alternative for me.

I used it to paint the entire inside and outside of the hull with the exception of under the water line with I had gel coated I like it a lot I would use is again with out hesitation.

It will leave a opake[sp?] look to it. It will not look finished.

For inside work [out of the direct sun] I use Shurwinn William's Tile Clad HS a true epoxy paint. A gal kit [Part A&B 1gal each] is aprox. $90 and goes a Looooog way as it's a very High Solid paint.
