Default Poly Fuel Tank

I want to replace my aluminum tank for a larger poly tank a friend gave me. Problem is the only way it will fit is if it is mounted right against the hull. Is this a problem?(It is a 55 gallon tank from todd w/no baffles.) The old tank is 30 gallon aluminum that sat on a glass/over plywood base that kept it elevated off of the hull. Just looking for opinions/advice. Thanks

You must have an early Seafari. My '72 came with a 29 gallon unbaffled tank mounted just as you describe. I replaced it with a 28 gallon baffled tank mounted the same way.

I originally ran into the same issue on my rebuild and i was told it would be fine. Just get some thin rubber mat from Home Depot and put between the tank and hull if you wanted. I talked to 3 different fiberglass/boat repair people and they all said the same.
I since have found and purchased one from the liquidators out of Florida that will fit on the supports, so now don't have that issue.
good luck

I also replaced my alum tank with poly tank (27 gallons). My aluminum w/ baffles...just barley got it out without having to cut deck. New tank came with top brackets that mouted to top of tank and then screwed into supports on stringers. Working out ok so far. I think you should be ok with 55 gallon poly tank. I would be concerned with anything with larger capacity without baffles though!
here is pic of my tank http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj157/fdheld34/th_100_0861.jpg[/IMG]

i installed a 30 gal. primary and 19 gal. aux. in mine by using expandable foam which i shaped after it set then put a glass "bed" over it for the tank to rest on. then i glassed in plywood bulkheads to trap them. i was lucky to find a poly tank that fit between my stringers by 3/8"

Dont think the poly tank will fit my I/O seafari. Alum. tank i took out was 45" and was a close fit. Poly tank at liquidators is 49 1/2". aft end hits motor mounts. still confused and searching.
