Default 2016 Garmin 94svChirp

2016 Garmin 94svChirp only updated once in summer of 16, I believe. Never had a problem with the chart plotter before. Sunday, while trying to get dead nuts over a rock (#), I was on the bow while my buddy was operating to get over his number. It was rough and I’m up in the hatch wondering what the f**k he is doing. We missed and tried several more times. Eventually he took a turn at traversing the hot, humid, confined space to get to the bow and anchor. He almost got sick, returned topside and never went below again! Haha

That’s when I found the problem. The GPS was very delayed in loading and updating, making it virtually useless. I was getting sick just trying to navigate. That’s when he said “I’ve been using the compass all morning!” We never got within 37 feet of the spot.

Start with an update?

TIA,
Vezo, Part II

Just curious....did you have the "North lock" on?

If the chart plotter is set to course loc it will drive you nuts if your trying to squat over a point in the ocean. While I like the course loc for running in the fog I prefer to north lock it if I drifting a rip or wreck. I pretty sure if you north lock it and zoom in all the way you will eliminate the need for the chart to keep refreshing.

Is this making an sense

Yes Sir! Makes total sense. I always use north up, even in my trucks. But I had a guest on board, younger, his numbers, and Part of convincing him to come along is I let him run the boat. First thing he did, was change the orientation, to run similar to his non-Garmin unit.

We couldn’t see land at 13 miles, so using the compass was even more difficult for me. Thanks Hermit!!!

How’s the fishing/weather on the Cape?

Michael.

Glad this made some sense. Love my 94sv but I hate that course lock.
I've been a few times. It's heating up

Nice! Thank you. He says I had it in another mode and that I had it wrong. I’ll get it figured out. Thank You!

You sir get an award! I would never let any one change my settings ever. That would be a deal breaker. And yes to the N up.

Get you a milk crate and get your anchor set up front before you ride out having everything including the anchor ball, rode and hook in the back of the boat. This avoids the gunnel walk of death to the front. Hermit is spot on with post and your friend put it into "course up" mode which is a cluster in most any situation.

As much as you anchor I would get that Rodan we were talking about. Problem solved!
