Hey Chris- we probably discussed this. If you use mechanical cables on your ETEC use the Teleflex TFextreme cables. My throttle was real annoying and sticky until I switched to the TFextremes, converted the throttle cam follower lever to rev C, and added an additional throttle return spring. The first two were probably the strongest medicine. Note my original throttle and shift cables were still pretty new when I replaced them with TFextreme. These recommendations apply whether you add PerfectPass or not.

Woah, can you elaborate?
My new to me 23 Sceptre has a 2012 225 Etec on it which works great, but during the winter rehab I put some new extreme cables on it, and now theres quite the lag in the the throttle from in gear to actual rpm increase.
I have the etec diag software and recalibrated the TPS sensor, but still have quite the lag.
Seems like theres a lot of throw in the binnacle from fwd to throttle.
Only adjustment (as far as I know) is the spin adjuster on the motor side of the cable.
Something else I can do?

Whew, let’s see what I recall. Compared to my old Merc, my 2012 ETEC 150 HO has always required more fwd to throttle motion, (but the ETEC also has a slower speed near idle which is nice around the dock). I don’t recall any difference in the fwd to throttle motion between the original, three year old BRP cables and the extremes.

The original key issue was acceleration or deceleration was not linear to throttle motion and at some points acceleration or deceleration might cause not-seated riders to lose balance. At the time there were a number of complaints about this on the etecownersgroup site. The stickiness has improved enough that neither me nor my watersports-driving wife complain anymore. The improvement was probably a combo of the extreme cables and replacing the sticky cam follower (PM me if you need more info on that).

I have the standard BRP gunnel mounted control. My TPS required re-adjustment after I added PerfectPass, which didn’t surprise me, because I had to modify the engine throttle lever to make PP work. But since then my “TPS out of idle range” fault has only coincided with the winterization process.
When I installed the extremes (a couple years after PerfectPass) I didn’t adjust anything in the gunnel-mounted control (if there are even adjustments). Before removing the original cables I did put an alignment mark on the engine throttle lever to note the position of the roller on the throttle cam to attempt to maintain the same relationship; I probably had to adjust the star adjuster to engage the aft end of the extreme cable with the pin on the lower end of the engine throttle lever; but with the extremes that was my only adjustment. There is a bit of dialogue on the etecownersgroup site about cable minimum bend radii, size of loops at the engine end, securing the cable well except at the engine loop, etc. for best results.

I’ll try to get an angular measurement on the throttle lever to gear engagement and to accelerate on my next run.

Yep got the nicest cables that Willard had Terry, and a couple extra feet for some nice sweeps in the console.

Maybe a seatrial next weekend??

I had the same issue on my 2006 Etec 150. The throttle adjustment was out of control and throwing passengers to the forward bulkhead before I took it in for service. Dealer could not find any issues until they river tested it. They returned it to me as dangerous as when I dropped it off.

It was as if you were using a worn out old hand control on a slot car. The rheastat was worn in the middle of throttle position, so you had all or nothing and the car would fly off the track at every turn. I did not want to take the boat back.

Ultimately I replaced the factory blue cables out, engine was in a crate until 2009, and in 2016 had 275 hours on it when I bought the SeaCraft. The new Extreme cables ended that. Why? I have no idea. Bushwacker tried to help out with TPS and dealer had no idea. Frustrating at best!!!
