The one I want to see is the record 142 pounder.....
We hook them while trying for snappers and grouper in 240-280 foot of water off from some of the bigger wrecks.
We use Penn 6/O reels loaded with 100# powerpro using 14/O circle hooks. Once you hook one (bigger than 50 pounds), you better get that rod in a rod holder or fighting chair unless you want to go in the water after him. Take a vise grip and tighten the drag all the way down (better do that ahead of time). Then have someone start the boat up and get a little distance between the fish and the wreck. Then sit straddle style on the gunnel, and wrench him up. After about 30 min, rebait, and do it again. Most guest on my boat are done catching AJ's after the 2nd fish. Too bad they don't taste as good as they fight. Most people that keep them either smoke or fry them.
