When I replaced the rub rail on my 20' I found that the rub rail screws were actually holding the deck and hull together. Most pop rivets had worked out and the bonding material was shot. It seems that the rivets were used only to tack the deck and hull together until the many dozens of rub rail screws were applied. I also used 5200 and new pop rivets.
I had tried many times to repair the original rail and finally replaced it with an all black, all plastic rail from TACO. It was a fairly easy job once the refastening was completed, and really looks great

My '72 23' CC had a semi-rigid 2-1/2" black plastic rub rail with a black insert. It was screwed in every 6" under the insert. After removing that, the deck cap was screwed every 6" with pan head screws and the bonding material was intact. I replaced the pan heads with countersunk flat heads. Then installed a new 2-1/2" black semi-rigid rub rail from Barbour Plastics screwed every 6" with a 1" stainless steel insert and that was screwed every 6". All the screws go into the deck cap. It was a lot of work, its strong and really made the hull look complete. -PF
