Whats a 2.5 rated at? 265 or so?

The boat can handle it, most operators can't...

i think the 2.5 race mercs are 260 or 280 hp.

I have the 18 with the Hermco Bracket and Evinrude 175. The Full flotation bracket makes a difference. With the prop I have on it, it will run 50. The boat handles well it gets up on plane fast and has plenty of power. My brother-in-law calls it a Ferrari. I would think twice about putting that large of a motor on your boat. Before I had the work done on the boat it had a 20" transome and with a 150 evinrude, it sat low in the water and always had water coming in the scuppers. I think even with your 25" transome you will have water comming in the back. Just a thought

As vcsjupiter was saying, well maybe in another way. As long as you are going forward you will do just fin. Just don’t put it into neutral and forget reverse.
Now lets ask another question could you mount that big of a engine on that small of a boat. Yes the bass boaters do it all the time but the boat was designed to handle it AND to handle it in FLAT water. The money you would save on the engine would be spent on the boat to re design it beyond the manufacturers intention. So the real question is do you want to re design your Boat???

That 225 is a BIG motor with a LOT more potential than the 225 sticker. I have a 1995 200 sitting in the garage and it's HUGE compared to the Mercury 2.5L that's right next to it . . . 2.4L Merc is even smaller. The 225 Evinrude is about the same physical size as a 250 Yamaha.

If I were you I'd lean toward a 2.4L or 2.5L merc v6 . . . I think it's a better combo for the 18.

My insurance agent, a fellow boater would ask me what the motor was and the maximum rating and "just say no". Insurance would not pay you or defend a liability issue if you exceed the max rating. I'm no lawyer, by I can assure you you'll be spending time in court if someone or something gets hurt.

Cool project. You don't see many OMC buildups. Wonder what I could get out of my 150? As light as it is, there might not be to much room for machine work. I have heard that those Boysen dual stage reeds boost bottom end and fuel economy. They worked well on a Suzuki quadracer I had.

I don't know which 150 your looking at but if it's the 60 degree carbed model you'll be happy with everything but its gas guzzeling trait. There's a big weight difference between the 60 and 90 degree design.
