Re: Wet transom
Pourable Transom Compound
NIDA-BOND POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND is ceramic filled polyester exhibiting exceptional physical properties. In particular, the compressive strength has been documented by an independent testing laboratory to be 3,895 psi (ASTM 695). This is several times that of plywood and 8 to 10 times that of PVC foam. In addition, the failure mode shows elastic yielding before failure. This makes the NIDA-BOND POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND material an excellent choice for critical applications such as coring transoms on power boat hulls. There are three methods of employing the NIDA-BOND POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND material as a transom core: 1. Specially Designed Hull Liner. 2. Use of Transom Jigs. 3. Filling the Cavity. I am in the middle of my Transom right now and plan to use this product. I did cut into my Transom to remove the "Mulch" I have ground down to the good Plywood and plan to insert 1/2 stainless rods for the nidacore to Grab and tie into the solid corners. If I would have JUST poured mine from the TOP as some suggest it would been a Patch job at Best. I do think adding the round stock will give the pour more to grab to as long as it doesn't block and make air pockets. PTC-5G 5 Gallon Pail......$ 139.00 PRICE INCLUDE MEKP HARDENER Thats the best price I have found so Far. |

Re: Wet transom
Thanks for that info on Nida-bond. Do you think a single 5 gallon would do the job?

Re: Wet transom
On my 23 Sceptre, the transom was wet for a couple of years before I redid it. It had a 250 Merc efi on it, there was some flex, but not excessive. There is a lot of glass in these boats, at least there was in mine. If you were closer, I would loan you my moisture meter, and you could tell exactly where and how bad it is. I have surveyed and looked at a bunch of boat for people, and almost all boats over 10 years old, especially if they were left in the water had wet transoms, regardless of manufacture. Many show no flex or weakness, but the moisture meter would show water.

Re: Wet transom
Frank - My 18 has a worm dirt transom reinforced with 2 aluminum plates . . . Zero flex. No need to blow 2k if it's just wet. Wood takes a long time to rot . . . and the old wood is much much easier to remove when it turns to mush. I say drill some more holes and wait 3 - 5 years until it's ripe for replacing.

Re: Wet transom
Hey guys i agree with big shrimpin.. I ran my twenty for two years with original transom and a 2003 honda fourstroke 225 Bolted right to transom with a Plate and a ton of 5200.
Its a 73 19'6 Some days you get the Oh sh*#($ where did that wave come from and have to do some serious manuevers to get back in on big days and not your typical south florida four foot slop... That damn transom would literally flex, and i dont mean wobble it would rubberband. they can take some serious abuse which im sure everyone knows. Money was tight when I re made my transom so I added One sheet marine grade on outside and added two layers of marine grade over inside of old transom Now its about 5 1/2 inches thick. Not to mention biaxil and resin. Now I have merc 250 w/bracket on it. Older model My neighbor also has a twenty 1969 and he used regular plywood.. <original owner> Transom is dry <no rot> I dont recommend it but hey it worked and he has a 175 straigt to transom. Best of luck Chris <Boat, Break Out Another Thousand> Seacraft <break out another five grand and Love it>> |
