Potter built vs 80's seacraft

I checked out a mid 80s SC 2 summers ago in chatham for a friend, besides the ancient johnson ob needed to be dropped overboard, bad decks, low cut transom, likely transom rot i ventured,bad wiring,sketchy gas tank, and insane stupid asking price of 18K...it was built very well what could see-the cap + gunnels were glassed heavier than my 77. i would not hesitate on a pre tracker 80s hull figuring it may very well need a full rebuild though, frankly seemed built stronger than my potter and I have no complaints there. I wondered if added a float bracket if the decks would bail with a guy in the corner as my 77 does not, if the deck height was raised up a wee bit from my 77?

I put a drop dead reccomendation at 8/9K, and the owner rejected. And I thought that was over the top. Around same time a partially rebilt SC in CT or RI went for about 8/9K with transom done most of the hard work done. Pretty sure that 18K hull is still sitting in Chatham. Like any old boat, pay now pay later and factor your time effort. This summer same buddy drops 160K+ on a new center console from Blackfin, raves about how he likes Blackfins from the 80s. Did not have heart to say it is a Monterey with about 20 blackfin labels. Seems solid, time will tell. Maybe I am jealous. Maybe not of a 20 year note on a boat and a short season here.
