Default Inner liner removal on a '73 20' CC

So I looked at Capt. Brad's really cool boat pics and I want to cut out the liner from the forward deck back to the stern. I think it would be a nice place to add rod holders, etc. Do I have any issues with structural integrity? Does the foam in the void have any purpose, aside from scraping me up and clogging up my bilge pump?

I should clarify that I mean the liner from the gunwale down to the cockpit sole...

Bumpity...

Can somebody help out with this? I'd like to open up the liner and build a rod locker down both sides. Has anyone done this? Do I need to worry about losing structural integrity? I searched the archives and couldn't find anything related to this.

Thanks

Scot
