Default 23' Tsunami/Sceptre under-gunnel rod holder ideas ?

Just ripped the original teak rod holders off my 23 Tsunami. I was wondering if anyone ahs designed a different approach to this ( I don't mean just switching to starboard )

There is a lot of room under the gunnel, especially if you extend the present rod holder area forward to the mid-ship, vertical, structure/support-like thing ( where on one side of the boat, the fuel hose runs thru )

Anone thought this out or had it done ? I'd appreciate your thoughts rather than re-inventing the wheel.

Thx,

Alan

did this on my 20 seafari a few days ago, for the rodholers i cut 2 sub bulkheads out of 3/4 ply and then cut a nice section out of the part facing inwards and on there will mount the tigress rodholers that hold the butt and the tip. all the ply was heavily glassed and tabbed to all adjecent glass and has made the gunnels allot stiffer. also, in case your interested i also glassed a piece to where the undergunnel meets the liner at the transom and that im going to mount a cleat on that, allready cut the hole for a hawse pipe at the top, it going to look amazing with the hawse, deffinerly worth doing

I took out the teak as well and put in pre made rod-holders from a company called Signature Marine MFG. 954 987 1614 [email protected] e-mail. They screwed them to the two raised sections of the liner. Very easy install and clean look. They are a little pricy but the time savings makes up for it. They have a nice color brochure and price list of all their products. Click the link to see what I did.

Dave,
FYI - you can get those racks through Cabela's. I'm thinking of getting a set of the 3-rod holders.

Scott, the three is the way to go. I had four and the bottom reel was resting on the floor. That always bugged me. I bought them at the Miami boat show a couple of years ago. I Paid $100 for the pair on the last day of the show around closing time. My price list for 03 shows them at 70.99 per set for the fours and $52.99 per set for the threes. Both are mounted on white or black starboard

I just put these Solo holders on mine, could have actually fit 3 on each side. They have a nice clean look, and hold the rods tight so they don't rattle.

Alan,
I have problems also with the original racks. Seems like rods rarely fit right. Long rods never fit. I installed an overhead rack in the cabin. I notched out a couple inches from the top of the anchor locker bulkhead and can stick the tip of the long rods into the anchor locker. Works great, the rods are protected from coolers and stuff banging into them and you can lock them up and leave them in there out of the weather.

alb - i know your doing the whole boat so you might as well make your own out of ply and glass em in, itll be allot cheaper and if you glass it heavy and make it structural itll stiffen the whole thing up even more
just food for thought

Ben, Got any pics of the holders you did on your seafari. I'm at that point on my 20 Sceptre and would like to see how they came out. I've been trying to figure out what I want to do there. As far as Abl11's boat I don't think it will work. The 23 unlike the 20 has a finished innerliner from the floor up. There are no cut outs like the 20 for rod holders. So to glass to the finished innerliner would be counter productive as it won't add strength to anything but the liner itself. Plus the labor savings alone will pay for a couple sets of pre made rod racks.

Thx for all the response guys. Being that I am re-doing the entire boat ( just finished placing the transom in today ), I removed the teak holders because they are so shot (whoever owned the boat 28 years before me, power washed the shit out 'em).

After removing them, I thought, hell - there's room forward of these stock rod holders that would allow me to extend forward the rod holders as well as create a nice shelf w/ a high lip to securely contain all of the misc crap that collects on a boat ( that could be bad or good ! ).

I like the look of the clear plastic rod holders, but it might be too sleek for me. I do like the look and feel of teak and that would be my first choice. Being that I let my teak weather naturally, maintenance is not a huge concern - the benefits outweigh the negatives.

So, I am looking for some ideas. Again, this is all backburner stuff - I have sooooooo much to do, but it is something that I am planning on..
